MoreTut EDITOE SPEEFACE The method of revising theL egends of theM adonna has heen the same as that followed inS acred and Legendary A rt, and is so fully explained in the preface to that work that it is only necessary to repeat here that the editors duties have been to investigate the authorship of each work of art mentioned, to ascertain the present locality of the same, and to add to the lists of examples ixnder each subject such modern works as are worthy to be classed with them. It has not always been possible to discover the whereabouts of pictures in private collections, as many of these collections are inaccessible to the general public, and some are no longer intact. The following are known to have been dispersed since Mrs. Jameson swriting: The Wallerstein collection of Kensington Palace ;L ordS hrewsbury scollection at Alton Towers (sold in 1857) ;L ordO rford s(sold in 1856) ;L ordN orthwick s(sold in 1859) ;M r. Bromley s(sold in 1863) ;the Puller-M aitland collection (sold in 1879) ;the Eastlake collection (sold in 1894) ;the Blenheim collection, and that belonging toM r. Samuel Kogers. The text of this volume, like that in the other volumes of the series, will be found materially unchanged, and the editorial comments can be readily distinguished therefrom by the brackets in which they are inclosed. The scheme of illustrations has been very carefully prepared, with a view to selecting from the multitude of examples described by Mrs. Jameson those which constitute a representative treatment of Madonna art.
