MoreThe setting for Parable of the Bridge is based on a real place, Mostar, Bosnia. Mostar is a picturesque city located in a deep valley, and surrounded by red-roofed houses. Flowing through its center is the lovely, aquamarine Neretva River. The most famous of the bridges crossing the Neretva is the Stari Most, for which the city is named. Built in 1566, during the days of the Ottoman Empire, Stari Most was the oldest footbridge in the world. For centuries it withstood wars, invasions and earthquakes, held together with mortar, unique by today's standards, because its ingredients were mainly goat hair and eggs. Stari Most linked two different cultures. Daily these cultures, each on a different bank of the river, crisscrossed the bridge. Their peaceful exchange of commerce, respect and communication, earned the bridge the admiration Americans give to the Statue of Liberty.
Tragically, the bridge was destroyed during the war in 1993. As the stones rained into the river, so did the peace and goodwill between the people. After the war, a temporary bridge was built. I stood on this bridge several times in the summers of 2001, 2002, and in April 2004. Each time I was awed by the beauty of the city and the Neretva River. I saw the beginnings of the permanent bridge being built by a caring task force of many nations. It was completed in June 2004. I pray its completion will bring a greater healing between the peoples it connects. (this is a color picture book... (FIRE and PC view best)
