MoreAlex's senior year of high school is marred by the fact he'll be spending much of it babysitting his junior sister, Kristie. And now Alex's best friend Steve suddenly can't stop talking about how hot she is. Just what every guy wants.
Juggling his responsibilities as editor of the school paper, a dean's list student, and as a big brother has come more easily to Alex than most guys. But something Alex can only confide to Angela-a new girl at the paper--is that he and Kristie are emotionally on their own. Their father has his hands full with their alcoholic mother, so Kristie has been Alex's responsibility for as long as he can remember. When Angela tells Alex of her own past, Alex finally feels as if he's found someone he can talk to. Also, Kristie's new boyfriend Tim really seems like the responsible, caring type; maybe it's time Alex can put down his burdens and just be an ordinary kid for just a bit, till graduation.
All of those hopes come to a crashing halt when one night Alex gets a chilling call. His sister has been raped-but she won't go for help and she won't tell him who did it.
The humiliation and rage threaten to overwhelm him; worse still is the frustration of not being able to fix this pain like he's fixed pain for Kristie all her life. But watching her downward spiral grinds his life to a complete halt. When Kristie's refusal to get help puts him at crosshairs with everyone in his life, Alex must make an impossible choice: whether to continue to indulge his sister's denial-or cut himself off from her completely and let her drown.
Many stories deal with what rape is like for the person who's raped; this is the tale of the people who love them, and the many ways rape reaches out like a cancer to devour anyone and everyone in its path; it takes no prisoners and leaves few lives unscathed.
