I'm 9 years old and I live in a small town in the United States with my annoying older sister Zoey, my dog Rupert, and my parents. I go to school nearby. Over the years I have learnt a lot about life and how to handle things at home and at school.
In this collection of 10 short stories (these are short stories 11-20 of Maddy's Guide to Life) you get:
School Detention: Mrs. Whitehead is our school secretary (some of us call her Mrs. Pimple) and she's 4 feet tall and about the same wide and about 150 years old. She is scary and can shout really loud. This funny short story is about the day that I got detention from Mrs. Whitehead. I wasn't even doing anything wrong; I was just standing there with Joey and Amanda. Anyway, detention's such a drag but this one turned out good in the end.
Amanda and the Kitten: This story comes after the one about Amanda's parents getting divorced (Maddy's Guide to Life: Divorce). Amanda returns to school and we find out that she has a new step mom and a new step brother, Ralphie, who is 6 years old. Amanda wants us to be mean to Ralphie and his mom so she can make them go away and get her own mom and dad back together. We didn't like being asked to be mean to Ralphie but a little kitten made things so much better.
Jelly Fight: This funny short story is about our class party. I wanted to `borrow' some lipstick from my sister Zoey but it ended up on my T-shirt when she caught me in her room. I just wanted to be cool at the party. At the party there were all these cool colored drinks and jellies. They looked real nice...but then Amanda and Joey started a food fight. Ssssh...don't tell Mom I said this, but it was SO COOL.
The New Boy in Class: This funny short story is about Roop the new boy in our class. He's a Sikh from India. At first we thought he was an Indian from America and we got sooooo confused. To start with some of the kids teased him but he's so cool - as long as you stay away from his food. Find out what happened when he joined our class and then what happened when two kids tried his lunch....
Lisa's Bat Mitzvah: This short story is about the time that my family went to a bat mitzvah for Lisa. I didn't know what a bat mitzvah was. I thought it was something to do with bats and then when I found out what it was, there were lots of rules to learn but it was all worthwhile because Lisa had so much fun - and so did I - especially with the candy. Read the book to find out more about what happens.
I Don't Want to go to Bed: This short story is about something that happens every day. Mom wants me to go sleep even though I'm not ready. I try everything: telling her that I'm not tired, reading in my bed after `lights out', playing shadow puppets with the torch and talking to my sister. Well, as you'll see none of it works because in the end sleep comes and gets me.
Tidying my Room: This short story is about my bedroom. I don't know why, but it gets messy. All the time. Anyway, in this story my room is so messy you can't see the floor. Mom wants it tidied and I try everything to avoid doing it including distraction and tidying shortcuts but Mom knows everything!
Painting my Bedroom: This short story is about the day I decided to paint my bedroom. I forgot to ask first and paint went everywhere. But after a few ups and downs, things turned out really good, just read the story to find out how!
Moons in Uranus: This funny short story is about our class trip to the Observatory. It didn't take long before Joey told Amanda that she had moons in Uranus. But Amanda gave back as good as she got. Boy, did we have a hilarious class trip. It was a total gas.
Amanda's Birthday Party: This short story is about Amanda's birthday party. I was so desperate to be invited but then I wasn't. It made me sad but then my sister Zoey had a really cool idea: I could have a mini
