An introduction to the ill-fated Astor-Hunt expedition of 1811, in which men hired by John Jacob Astor set out from St. Louis to a proposed new settlement at the mouth of the Columbia River, where it meets the Pacific Ocean. John Day, a "Kentucky hunter" hired for the expedition, has had several western landmarks named for him, including towns, rivers, and a dam.
