Awakenings, by Martha J. Ross-Rodgers, portrays the life of a poor adolescent who faces the hardships of today's society. Betty, a 15-year-old high school student, has dreams of great material wealth, which starkly contrasts with the lifestyle that she and her mother currently live. Like so many of the youth today, Betty sees quitting high school and entering the work force as the quickest path to making her dream a reality. It is only after a brief experience with the "real world" however, that she realizes the importance of education. Awakenings is the story of a young girl who must beat the odds and society's negative expectations of her to achieve.
