Title: Enchanta Hilarious read .... RECOMMENDED for the 8 - 11 set .... 4 stars _________________________________________________ The Review Changer, a shape-shifter and the youngest son of Enchanta's King Wisher joins New Jersey residents, David and Barbara Morgan in their quest to aid the King. When Barbara and David Morgan are flown away from their New Jersey town by a glorious flying horse, Wings flies them to Enchanta. Beneathians, a strange heartless society who came from the center of the earth and have taken over King Wisher's land are in control. The Morgan kids have arrived to aid the elderly King Wisher. Unfortunately for the people of Enchanta, Wisher has lost his power for wishing during a recent earthquake. Wings, the flying horse was sent by the King in an effort to find someone who can help save the land from total destruction by the frightful Beneathians. The children along with Changer set out to locate Changer's older brothers, Inventor and Pretender. On top of everything else; Wisher’s wife, Queen Hope, has been taken prisoner by the Beneathians and Wisher is feeling a lack of confidence due to his problems with his wishing ability. Somehow Barbara and David manage to track down Wisher's three supernatural sons, Changer, Pretender and Inventor and reunite them with Wisher. Next the group engages in a audacious foray into Beneathia in an effort to rescue Queen Hope. During their raid the three brothers hoodwink the Beneathians during numerous hilarious situations. At last the Beneathians are conquered, Wisher regains his kingdom, and Barbara and David are again returned to New Jersey. Once David and Barbara are able to reunite the King and his sons the reunited the group is ready to try to locate and rescue Queen Hope. During their quest the children meet an attention-grabbing group of Enchanta residents including a shaggy-haired barbarian, a babbling brook that really babbles but offers little more than useless prattle, as well as a friendly ram and a curious lion. Enchanta is the first in a trilogy of playful offerings by writer Jay Dubya. Filled with nonsensical riddles, ludicrous puns, plays on words and hidden meanings this humorous tale is sure to tickle the funny bone of the 8-11 set. Hidden within jocularity, buffoonery and absurdity are themes of self reliance, conviction and bravery as otherwise implausible characters join in the spirit of challenging experiences. The narrative technique employed by writer Jay Dubya is at times a bit adult for younger kids, nevertheless the humor and silliness filling the work through fun with words and ideas makes Enchanta a good giggle for kids. Fantasy adventure novel Enchanta is a work intended for children in the middle grades. Enchanta is a good choice for the pleasure reading list, classroom library corner and the school library.
