Tracey Campbell Pearson takes a classic tale and breaks it down for younger readers/listeners. This fourteen page board book is filled with detailed water-color illustrations, each on a double page spread. The illustrations show a toddler aged girl who has her arms filled with a huge pillow, her blanket, her teddy bear and a steaming bowl of curds and whey. An endearing black and white cat follows her from page to page eyeing her food. When at last our main character is frightened by a spider, and runs off leaving her food behind her, the cat finally gets his meal. The illustrations work wonderfully with the text which happens to be only one line (about five words) on each double page spread. Once readers/listeners are able to memorize this timeless poem, it would definitely be a participatory book for story time.
