MoreIt is important for readers to know that the poet sprang from the loins of the solid British middle class, at Camberwell on May 7, 1812; that his early schooling was marked by a precocity which is often absent from the youth of genius, and his education at home by an amazing irregularity which led him into those " holes and corners of history" which were to furnish his poetry with so many unfamiliar and puzzling allusions; that he attended University College as "a bright handsome youth with long black hair falling over his sholders"; that he met Miss Elizabeth Barrett in May 1845, wooed her in one of the most impetuous and celebrated of courtships, raised her from an invalid's couch, married her secretly, and carried her away from the gloomy house in Wimpole Street, far away to the Italian sunshine, in 1846; that he enjoyed fifteen years of married happiness, during which time a son was born to him in 1849; that death robbed him of Elizabeth in 1861, and that thereafter he continued to write more vigorously than ever, pouring out an increasing flood of volumes until, full of years and honors, he died at Venice on December 12, 1889. It may also be desirable for readers to know the sequence of his writings: "Pauline," 1833; Paracelsus," 1835; Sordello," 1840, "Pippa Passes,"1841, "Dramatic Lyrics," 1842; "The Return of the Druses," 1843,"The Ring and the Book,"1868-and so on and on. He believed in man, nature, and in God; he found in imperfection a promise of perfection, and in mortal life a promise of immortality.
