EVERY-GlRL. There's the voice again, and it's speaking to me. I believe--it's by---the--window. (She goes timidly to the window and then opens it, and starts back shivering. A light airy little creature, dressed in pale green robes and with wavy hair skips into the room. All the motions are quick and elf-like.) EVERY-GlRL. (Astonished.) Gracious, how very cold it is. Who are you? Fresh Air. (Puffing out her cheeks and blowing gaily at her.) There, can't you guess my name? I've tried to get into your room many times, but you never would let me in. EVERY-GlRL. (In amazement.) You are mistaken, you never called on me before tonight. This is the very first time I heard your voice. (She closes the window.) What is your name, and where do you live? Fresh Air. (Sitting lightly on the edge of the table.) My name is Fresh Air, and I live all over the world. I love the country best of course, among the trees and the flowers, but the city is pleasant too, that is, out on the streets. (Fanning herself with her hand.) I don't like it in--this--room--very much! (Panting.) If I lived here, I think,--I--should die. I begin--to choke--already--Why don't you open your window? (She runs over and opens the window.) EvERY-GlRL. Oh, don't do that! I am never allowed to sit in a room with the window open. I'd catch cold. Fresh Air. (About to climb out.) Very well. You can't live in a room with the window open, and I can't live with the window closed. I think I'll say good-night. EvERY-GlRL. (Eagerly.) Oh, please don't go. I like you.
