A great number of indigenous groups are widely spread through Amazonia, a vast expanse of land in South America known as "the lungs of the world" because of the large amount of oxygen they produce. The Kayap? Indians are one the most characteristic tribes of this region filled with countless rivers and forests; they reside around the Xingu and the Tocantins tributaries of the Amazon river. These semi-sedentary tribes represent an ancient culture of seasonal farmers and gatherers: during the rainy season, they cultivate the land; during the dry season (July-September), however, they hunt, fish and gather fruit. Kayap's live in highly complex wheeled-shaped villages. These indigenous people are strong advocates of the preservation of the planet, and their ethnicity.
