This book gathers nature poetry that I wrote over the last thirty years. Some of the poems have been published before, in my previous books, and some have been translated into Chinese and published in Taiwan.
The book has three sections: Learning From The Birds; Jungle; and, Nature As Metaphor. The first sections collects many poems that explore the antics, wisdom and suffering of birds. In the second section, I take the reader on a long trip to the Panamanian jungle, with stops in New York City. Nature as a metaphor for many aspects of human life anchors the third group of poems.
The dominant format of the poems is free verse although there are also haiku and some poems with more traditional rhyme and rhythm patterns. Many of the poems also use concrete poetry techniques that explore the visual space of the page as part of the meaning of the poem.
My poetry comes from my life and from my life experiences. I use words to express feelings, images and ideas. In this book, My Book Of Nature, I present many aspects of my experiences of nature in different settings, such as forest, mountains, seashore and jungle. I let nature speak through me as much as possible and I use nature to let me speak as well. I feel that this book can introduce readers to aspects of natural experience that they have never known and encourage readers to find their own songs of nature.
