Young Tom of Warwick misses the familiar surroundings of home when he goes to the castle to become a page and to learn about knighthood and chivalry. His new surroundings seem cold and unfriendly, but he soon encounters kindly Master William, the armourer, whose action-packed stories of brave men and valiant deeds inspire Tom and his fellow pages to work hard in the hope of one day becoming knights themselves. Tom's adventures, and the stories he hears from Master William about knights from many traditions will recreate life in a medieval castle in a way that will both inform and entrance young readers and provide an opportunity for discussing the moral questions around combat and warfare both in the past and today.
