Son tres los protagonistas de esta extrana y fantastica aventura literaria del siglo XX : dos hombres -Herbert Stencil, que busca algo que cree haber perdido, y Benny Profane, quien, como nunca tuvo nada que perder, nunca ha buscado nada- y V., una enigmatica mujer que tan pronto puede ser una joven desflorada en el Cairo, como la hembra de una rata de alcantarilla en Nueva York, una bailarina alemana en el suroeste africano, un misterioso pais o una lesbiana de Paris. Pero �por que Stencil se empena en investigar la verdadera identidad de V. ?
