"Mirage," a Psychological Suspense, is Nancy Gettelman's fifth novel. Like her previous one, "Full Circle," it is placed in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and draws upon her knowledge of the city. In "Mirage," the reader is immediately made aware of the death of a wealthy Milwaukee industrialist, Warren Reuter, engaged to be married to a widow from Palm Springs. The protagonist, Gretchen Meier, a widow, whose two sons worked for Warren in his large Beer Distributorship, is puzzled by his death. As well, she is perplexed by the behavior of his fianc�, especially her apparent lack of interest in her grown son. Stephen Boswell, the deceased's lawyer, and a social acquaintance of Gretchen's, plays an important part in this unusual case. However, he has to limit himself because of "client confidentiality." His sister, Patricia, a therapist, visits him for a week and becomes good friends with Gretchen. As the two women try to unravel the mystery, Patricia encourages the incipient caring that has developed between her brother, a widower, and Gretchen.
