Their memories live in the songs passed from one generation to another. Most humans have forgotten the songs of spirit that flow through all life, but the native people of Vancouver Island and the Canadian Northwest have preserved the Orcas' songs in their tribal stories.

Taahiasu (ta-he-a-soo), a nine year-old Salish girl is drawn to the songs that haunt her daily life. She walks in the world of the old ones and the animal spirit guides. Human life and its inane gender roles, rituals and practices hold no meaning for Taahiasu. She secretly longs to join the Orcas, and escape the boredom of life's demands. Misunderstood by children her own age that lack her precious gift, Taahiasu runs from her family and tribe, fleeing their taunting criticism and laughter. The Orcas' freedom beckons her, so she seeks refuge in the churning depths of the ocean with creatures she knows will welcome her and sets off in her tiny canoe. A great storm sweeps Taahiasu out to sea then huge wages pull her and her tiny craft under. Drowning, she feels her life fleeing as the water enters her body. As she cries out to the Great Spirit for help, something suddenly plucks her from certain death.
