Contrary to popular belief, the legendary Paul Bunyan really existed. He was a fugitive from his native Quebec, having to flee for his life during the Papineau Rebellion.
Little is known about the twilight years of Paul Bunyan. Only those closest to Paul Bunyan were aware that he had fathered a child, Pauly. At that time Paul Bunyan was said to have developed some health problems which seemed to worsen during the following winter. He seemed to feel that his demise was near at hand-like an animal in the twilight of its life. Finding a way to provide for his boy hung heavily on his conscience, and there seemed to be only one solution. The weary giant made straight for the wisest man he had ever known- the Swamp Angel.
If he had a proper name, it was not known to the people of the forest, but it was said that the wise man had retreated to the Great Purple Marsh to live his life in solitude. "The Swamp Angel here is gonna take care of you. No matter what, you mind him!" Pauly appeared stunned, but offered no signs of emotion. "You're a Bunyan," continued his father. "You can grow up in a proper manner. I guess I'll say goodbye now..." His voice trailed off as he straightened up, suddenly looking very tired.
The young boy watched, transfixed as his father turned and wearily headed back to the edge of the forest. He did not even look back over his shoulder - nobody had ever seen Paul Bunyan shed a tear. And so begins the tale of survival, liberally sprinkled with woods lore, early pioneering methods, and historical anecdotes. The Son of Bunyan Series is the kind of stories that keep young and old alike on the edge of their seats for many a dark night.
