David Levinthal photographs toys and other mass culture objects in a way that prompts viewers to challenge stereotypes and question cultural myths. One of his major previous subjects was the Barbie doll, recast as a wanderer through a postmodern dreamworld. Now he takes on TV's most famous cartoon family, with equally powerful results in 120 color photographs. Levinthal's images show the Simpsons against black backdrops, isolating or emphasizing a particular gesture or scene representing a political, cultural, or ideological subtext of the series. With black humor and mordant imagination, he reveals elements of discrimination, obsession, and unrest in the evocative realm of this satirical cartoon. Also included are storyboards, script segments, and never-before-seen materials from The Simpsons archives. The Simpsons, distributed to over 30 countries, celebrates its 300th episode in February, 2003.
