WOWBugs introduces a new experimental animal -- the WOWBug, Melittobia digitata -- that is commonly found in nature but has never before been used in the pre-college classroom. The animal is not only new, but also absolutely bizarre. For capturing student interest, it's hard to top a little insect that has wings but hops and plays possum, takes only three weeks to complete its life cycle, produces up to 700 offspring (95 percent of them female), and includes blind males who cannibalize their brothers and mate with their sisters! For three years, with National Science Foundation funding, teams of teachers worked with researchers at the University of Georgia to develop WOWBugs' potential for teaching a wide range of fundamental biological concepts and life science skills. This book of classroom-tested activities and experiments is one of the outstanding results of that project -- highly engaging for students of of many different ages and ability levels.
