This book has been taken from the "Nature Study" series, which is an esay-reader edition of Wayland's "Discovering Nature" series. The text has been shortened and simplified, and checked by an expert in the teaching of reading. This book could be used simultaneously with the original volume in mixed ability classrooms. This work begins by explaining what birds of prey are and what features are unique to them. The different groups of birds of prey, such as eagles, hawks, kites, falcons and vultures are described here, while owls are also included. Further chapters describe the different habitats where birds of prey occur, and their methods of catching prey. Reproduction and raising young are clearly explained, while the author also discusses how birds like the Swainson's hawk and the honey buzzard migrate each year. Finally the author looks at the threats facing birds of prey (disturbance, trapping and pesticide poisoning), and suggests how we can protect them by conserving their habitats. The author has also written "Hedgehogs" in Wayland's "Nature Study" series.
