When young, naive Donal Hickey is forced to leave his native Ireland in the late fifties due to the recession, he is oblivious to the adventures that lie just beyond his narrow horizons. Moving in with his generous brother Michael near Blackpool, he begins his first job, every new experience carrying with it a lesson and, more likely than not, a hilarious escapade before he finds himself unemployed once again. Unable to face the prospect of returning home without work, he joins the RAF and finds friendship with Mervyn, a young Welsh lad with a nose for trouble that is almost as sensitive as Donal's. Though sadness looms in the shape of his father's death, Donal's innocent tenacity sees him through to new adventures involving, not least, an encounter with an overtly homosexual opera singer's brother, and the disastrous silver wedding anniversary party that may or may not be Donal's fault. Everyone faces dilemmas in life, especially when young and inexperienced. As Donal Hickey, who wouldn't know 'how many beans make five', spreads his wings and discovers life, a story of broadening horizons, comic antics, friendship and difficult choices unfolds before him.
