The development of literacy skills (including writing, reading and spelling) is seen as paramount in the early years of schooling. This is a challenging time for some students when many skills are being mastered simultaneously. Research has indicated that many students who experience difficulties in the area of listening, reading or spelling may also struggle with motor, sensory and perceptual skills. This calls for a holistic intervention approach. The early detection of struggling students and the provision of specific assistance for them is crucial for mastery of these important skills. The program focuses on normalizing sensory-motor function to allow acquisition of phonological awareness and its direct application to reading and spelling. Gross and fine motor skills required for handwriting and cutting are incorporated into this program.
