As a French geologist working for an American oil company in Egypt, Jessica LaVette is sold into slavery by the very person who was assigned to protect her. The Berber chieftain who bought her for a few pieves of gold carries her into the wastes of the Sahara Desert. Crossing the Sudan and entering Chad his ultimate destination is a small slave market in the sould. After many months of having ot endure degradation, humiliation, and abuse she begins to harbor doubts that she will ever be able to return to the life she once knew. An American survey party, with a sevret of its own to protect, inadvertently rescues her after a violent confrontation with her captors. Finally free and returned to her home and family in France, fate continues to complicate her life.

After stalking her half way around the world, Jessica's adversary finally faces her in the deceptively idyllic setting on the Texas Hill Country.
