A laboratory is a place for experimenting and testing new ideas. It is a workshop for learning new things. A literature lab is a place (or way of organizing the classroom) where students can interact with the literature they read, demonstrate their knowledge and original thinking, and have fun doing it.
Literature Lab is an easy, creative way to involve students with books through projects that engage both their hands and minds. Each exciting hands-on project includes a description of the project, complete directions, an illustration, and grading criteria. The motivating projects include character bag, poster, scrapbook, collage, project cube, shape book, peek-a-boo pictures, thought web, and many more. The 44 projects are fun to complete and will generate enthusiasm, but they are also structured so that students must demonstrate a clear understanding of the book they have read as well as add some of their original thoughts about the book. By combining the projects with thought-provoking guidelines, students are encouraged to respond thoughtfully to literature and present their ideas in an appealing format. With a wide variety of projects covering the spectrum of literary content, you'll find plenty of projects to last the entire year.
Other books that provide a flexible format for analyzing literature include Creating Quality Literature Units, Junior Literature Companion, and Literature Companion.
