MorePublished for the 50th anniversary year of the Korean War, Remembering the Forgotten War: Korea, 1950-1953, is a moving collection of History Book Club members' experiences and memories from that conflict. Included are firsthand battle experiences from men and women who served in the war, stories of life in the military in Korea, and poignant tributes from family members to the veterans, alive and departed, who served in the war. The writings encompass a broad emotional spectrum: pride, fear, hope, anger, gratefulness, despair, and even, occasionally, humor. Some write about their combat experiences. Others talk about different kinds of service; Ray Muench worked in the vital yet largely unheralded quartermaster corps, and is justifiably proud of the commendation that the 108th Quartermaster Bakery Corps received for its contribution to the war effort. Some of the stories are remembrances of special events or individuals: Homer Davis writes of a group of American soldiers "adopting" an orphaned Korean boy into their camp, and how a compassionate officer looked the other way instead of turning him out. Henry McDermott tells the poignant story of his "guardian angel," Billy Shaw, a young black soldier in a prisoner-of-war camp.
History Book Club members also submitted many of their own personal photographs taken during the Korean War; we've included more than 70 of these evocative photos in Remembering the Forgotten War.
