Mayflower
Book Description
Most students connect the Pilgrims with Thanksgiving when they see pictures of these early Americans with their big hats and read poems about their meal with their Native American neighbors. But how much do they really know about why these European immigrants came to America and how they lived? Use the creative activities in this book to bring the Pilgrims right into your classroom!

Students will discover for themselves why the Pilgrims left their homeland and came to a new world, what their boat the Mayflower was like, how they spent their time on the ship and what they ate during the voyage, how they lived in their new home and why we remember them today. They'll learn some Pilgrim words that sound strange to us and see that some words they know were spelled differently in those days. Students will enjoy hearing some of the unusual names given to Pilgrim children.
To help students understand the Pilgrims better, they will talk about the challenges of moving to a new place and share their own feelings about leaving friends and family to go where everything is new. Students will try washing dirty clothes in salt water and they'll play games enjoyed by Pilgrim children. They'll learn how the Pilgrims and Native Americans cooperated in order for their people to live peacefully with one another, and how one Native American, Squanto, became the Pilgrims' best friend.
The study culminates with a Thanksgiving feast with a menu from that first Thanksgiving and student-made costumes.
