The first day of school can be the most exciting day of a child's life - Penelope Penguin is no exception. Not only does Penelope wake up early, but she also dresses herself for the first time. In her favorite blue dress and matching barrette, Penelope bounds into the kitchen for an extra-special breakfast -- pancakes topped with maple syrup, her absolute favorite!
At the breakfast table, Penelope's older brother, Peter, offers words of wisdom about the first day of kindergarten and lets Penelope in on a delicious secret -- milk and cookie time! Once a week, one student is chosen to bring cookies for the entire class to share; around lunchtime the "yummy fun time" begins. Penelope becomes so engrossed in her daydreams about milk and cookie time that she completely forgets to eat breakfast!
After the class' hard day of finger painting and making new friends, Mrs. Lionheart, the Crittertown Grammar School's Kindergarten teacher, announces milk and cookie time has arrived. Unfortunately, it's just at that moment that Mrs. Lionheart realizes she forgot to bring the cookies from home. Penelope's tummy growls so loud the entire class can hear how hungry she is. With milk and cookie time in jeopardy, who will save the day?
