Eddie Thompson, who pitches for the Coyotes in the Oakdale City League, has to battle his feelings of rivalry and resentment against a teammate, Chase Matthews. Chase is trying to win the league's best pitcher award called The Golden Arm Trophy, at Eddie's expense. Eddie tries to stay focused on his original goal of helping his team win the City Championship, but the worse Chase's behavior becomes, the more Eddie wants to beat him for the trophy, too. Along the way, he learns the importance of being a team player and discovers the value in hard work and fundamentals from his coach, Tom Haffner. Eddie also gets a tough lesson in why he should not disobey his parents. Finally, he has to make a choice when he figures out a secret that will help Chase win the most important game of the season for the Coyotes but which will probably cost Eddie a chance at winning The Golden Arm Trophy.
