This boxed kit brings to life the extraordinary ancient art of the totem pole. The 16-page pull-out booklet reveals the incredible legends behind totem pole characters, and the kit has everything needed to build and paint a unique totem pole in the native tradition.

With North American Totem Poles, young readers will discover the unique cultures of seven First Nations living along the Pacific Northwest coast. Each character in a totem pole plays an important role in the myths and legends of these peoples. To the Tlingit, the killer whale is an omen of good luck because it once helped a young boy. To the Nootka, the wolf is the best hunter on land and is sought as a spirit aid for hunters. Raven, the irrepressible trickster, stole daylight and sometimes appeared as a human.

These and other myths are illustrated with vibrant colorful drawings reminiscent of the best Native art. Throughout the booklet are photographs of totem poles, crests and other important artifacts. The totem pole pieces follow traditional designs and can be assembled in any order to create a unique totem pole. Instructions on how to paint the pole are included with four water-soluble, non-toxic paints and a brush.
