That was the weirdest part of all of this: they were telling me all of these things that I was doing, and I didn't know about any of it. Rueben had even thought I was dead. In fact, he was sure I was dead. Finally I had said to him, "Rueben, I'm not dead, all right. So stop your blubbering and find out where we're going." He just looked at me, as if he wasn't sure I was telling the truth or not. When fifteen-year-old Lefty Carmichael finds out he has epilepsy, his world is pretty much turned upside down. The idea of having a seizure at a totally unexpected moment is pretty scary at first, but Lefty comes to believe that he can handle it. What he's not sure he can handle is the reaction of his family and friends to the news of his disability. His mom passes out the first time she witnesses a seizure. His best friend Rueben spreads rumors about him. His almost-girlfriend is too scared to be alone with him anymore. And it gets worse! In Lefty Carmichael Has a Fit, Don Trembath presents a realistic picture of the effects a disability can have not only on the person afflicated but also on the lives of family and friends. In spite of its serious subject, this is a sensitive, humorous novel very much in the tradition of the author's successful Harper Winslow series (The Tuesday Cafe, A Fly Named Alfred, and A Beautiful Place on Yonge Street). Trembath has created another wonderful cast of offbeat characters who deal with life's adversities with warmth, humor and spirit.
