Waiting for Pelly, the long-awaited sequel to one of Coteau's best-loved children's stories, Pelly, is the heartwarming tale of the simple, enduring relationship between a girl and a pelican.


As spring arrives in Saskatoon, Sandra is once again haunting the river bank, hoping her friend Pelly has returned with the rest of the pelicans. In chapters that alternate between Sandra's point of view and Pelly's, both their stories are told -- Sandra and her father have moved to a house and are coping with pushy neighbours and establishing a new garden; Pelly has found a mate and is setting up a nest of her own, on a lake an hour away from the city.


Sandra learns of Redberry Lake, and its combination visitor centre/research station, from a young researcher she meets on the riverbank in Saskatoon. Soon, she is making regular trips there to observe the pelican population, and hunt for Pelly. Over the course of the summer, Sandra learns that the people around her are much more complicated than she imagined. She has pleasant days, and more than one close call, on the tricky waters of Redberry Lake. Pelly is on a far arm of this lake, raising her new chicks, but will their paths ever cross? If they do, will they remember each other, and can their friendship ever be the same?
