Four-to-thirteen-year olds can experience the Christmas trees' preparations for Christmas in Paul McHugh's personal story of Lanky, BlueSteel, Bushy, EverGreen, LongNeedles, and WideBottom.

During the summer months, farmers prune Christmas trees in order to get that perfect tree shape. The farmer's last chore is to select one upward growing branch at the top of the tree-the leader-which will display the Christmas angel or star.

One tree, Evergreen, is accidentally overlooked in the trimming of the leader branch and immediately earns her the title "DeerHorns."

When Christmas season arrives and families scour the field in search of the best tree, EverGreen, aka Deerhorns, is not selected and remains in the field as her friends are carted off to homes for the Christmas holiday.

Deerhorns, alone and ashamed, feels neglected, ugly, and unloved, but a Christmas surprise is about to envelop her in peace and joy!
