This author's illustrations are extremely creative, unlike any I have seen before. Her characters start as stainless steel armaments and, through a complex process, end up being whimsical and heartwarming whether the character is animal or human. As a graphic artist myself, I know what a painstaking process this must be. She then photographs these figures and graphically arranges them on her pages during layout. More importantly, Ms Horstman's stories leave young readers with feelings of kindness and caring about the world around them, including the wonderful characters in her story line. She wants her young readers to apply the messages of her story to the larger world of their daily lives. This is a powerful mix for which she deserves great kudos. This is not your usual children's book author and not your usual children's book. It is a very fine read.
