John Hay was a 19th century statesman, diplomat, author, journalist, and private secretary and assistant to Abraham Lincoln. At age 22 he became secretary to Lincoln. He lived in the White House. Hay served in the Union army during the Civil War. Hay and Nicolay wrote a formal 10-volume biography of Lincoln and prepared a collection of his works. Hay was named ambassador to the United Kingdom in 1897. In August 1898, Hay was appointed Secretary of State and helped negotiate the Treaty of Paris of 1898 thus ending the Spanish American War. The Beard-Winners was published in 1883. The Bread-winners contains a love story between Alice and Farnham, but more importantly there is the struggle between labor and capital. Hay's story makes a case for the rights of the fortunate in society.
