Ten-year-old Jake Tanner and his parents have moved from New York City to Idaho, a countryside filled with acres of corn and potato fields. Jake's parents are happy because their dreams are being fulfilled, but Jake doesn't share their enthusiasm. He is completely out of his element. He misses his best friend and the noisy, busy city life. Shortly after moving into their new home, Jake begins an unlikely friendship with a scarecrow named Cory. Jake's parents don't believe their son when he tells them about his new friend, but they quickly notice his suddenly positive change to country life. Jake's father and his excavation crew are digging up the corn and potato fields where Cory and his family and friends once lived. Jake keeps secrets from Cory, and Cory isn't exactly honest with Jake either. They both learn a lesson about honesty and how some secrets need to be revealed in order to have a true friendship. When Cory explains to Jake that scarecrows aren't needed in the fields any longer to protect the crops, Jake is devastated, wondering what will happen to his new best friend.
