The three little girls are portrayed in each story when they were three years old. On publication of this book, Caroline was eight years old, and Madeline and Julia four years old. Caroline and Julia are sisters. Madeline is their cousin. Their mothers are Jennifer Spencer, a teacher, and Elizabeth Homer, a professional photographer. They were born and grew up in New Jersey.
