"The story is based on happy summer visits to the tiny Iowa town of Epworth, where Alonzo trades cousin Shirley's bicycle for an old horse, and rides 'out West.' "In 'Going to Golden,' Alonzo travels alone by train to Golden, Colorado, where his cousin does his best to fulfill Alonzo's Wild West fantasies. On the train, Alonzo enjoys the company of a girl his age, Julie Evans, who, Alonzo discovers, lives in Dubuque and also has relatives living in nearby Epworth. "Alonzo and Julie meet again in 'Summer Melodies,' when both happen to be visiting Epworth. Alonzo, who assumed he was the only young violin virtuoso in town, is not pleased to hear Julie also plays the violin. The reader is invited to discover how the story ends on a happy note."
