Amanda, age twelve, must become the mother when she and her baby brother, baby sister and older brother, David, are left like stray kittens on a street corner. It is the summer of 1928 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. When it becomes dark, they are desperate for a place to sleep. They try to sleep in an alley, but there are rats and other dangers there. In the alley, they meet Mr. Mole, a gruff old man with a kind heart, who doesn't have a home either. He lives in a hole with his dog, Unique. A cellar in the woods, next to a house pile, becomes the children's new home. The house has been leveled by a tornado. This is the story of the adventures they experience in their struggle to survive. They find that sometimes your friends become the family you chose for yourself.
