The Navajo Indian reservation contains some of the most beautiful landscapes in the United States. The rich culture and artistic quality of Navajo art is of world renown, attracting visitors seeking to witness and absorb the unique lifestyle. Behind the beauty and mysticism of the Navajo reservation lies a dark side. Among the poorest areas of the country, for many, life on "the Rez" is wrought with despair. Elvina Yazzie is a high school basketball star who becomes caught up in this whirlpool. But unlike many of her contemporaries, she has a dream she wants to make a reality. When she is taken from her violent home life to live with her grandmother on the reservation, Elvina immerses herself in traditional ways. She finds a spiritual balance she has never known. With her new-found strength she defies prejudice, inhibitions and stereotypes to make her dreams come true.
