It was useless to resist, dangerous even to protest; and with his mind full of thoughts flashing and interfering like lightning in his brain the youth slowly, reluctantly slid around the post and slouched toward the landing place, well-nigh dazed at this sudden promotion of his from "high private" in the continental army to the important post of horseboy under Colonel Tarleton in the British army. "Thank Heaven I got that message down to Tom!" he thought as he stumbled along with the half sobered jackies. Then he chuckled. "So I'm batman to the colonel. Well, I might have gone up a deal higher," with a glance at the yardarm of a vessel out in the stream. "It 'll be a roundabout way home, but perhaps I 'll get there all the safer. Now what's best to be done?" and he set his active brain to work in new directions, with all the versatility of thought which has been a distinguishing trait of young men of his race, ever ready to improve new circumstances as they turn up. As a result of his cogitations, presently when safely in the boat he appealed to his semi-captor, secondlieutenant Johnson. "Did I hear that officer, sir, say as I was to go along to take care of his hoss?" "That's it, my lad; and mind you jump when he tells you. That's Leftenant-Colonel Tarleton, one of the best cavalry officers living, in his own estimation," he added, under his breath. "We--ll, sir; I dunno's I care. It's colder'n Time, round New York, 'n I' spose it'll be warmer down South. I'll do my best, sir; but I don't know much 'bout hosses, ma only kept a caow. I hope you 'll let summun tell me what ter do so't I kin do it right, first off."...
