The vessels in the skin will then all contract and send the blood to the inner parts and fill the capillaries of these parts very full. Sometimes the blood stays in the capillaries of the internal parts, and these parts become swollen and sore. Very often the throat and lungs become swollen and sore. Then we say we have a cold in the throat and lungs. After one has been warm, it is easy to take cold in the intestines also. The abdomen should be covered when one is asleep, and when the weather is cold, the whole body should be covered during sleep. Clothing.--When the weather is cold, enough clothing should be worn to keep the body warm, or we may take cold. Wet clothing causes colds, because it makes the skin cold and sends the blood to the internal parts of the body. Persons who are sick and weak should have enough clothing to keep them warm in the mornings and evenings. The Hair.--Hairs grow on almost all parts of the body. A hair grows in a little hole (hair follicle) in Fig. 72.--A hair in its follicle. the skin. The cells in the papilla at the bottom of the hair grow and make new cells and push the hair up, so that it grows longer all the time. At the sides of the follicles are little glands that make oil for the hair. This oil comes out of the glands into the follicles and out on the skin. If one brushes the hair, the oil will spread all along the hairs and make them shiny and oily. It is good for the hair to brush it; for if the hair is not brushed, the oil may stop up the mouths of the follicles. The hair should occasionally be washed with good soap (or gogo bark) to take off the old oil and the dust. It is not necessary to put oil on the hair, if the hair is well brushed.
