Sarah's Story A Children's Story of Sarah Winnemucca In the mid 1800's Sarah Winnemucca saw the invaders as 'owl-eyes', as strange yet powerful, as curious. She was fascinated with something she called a talking rag which we today would call a letter. She bragged that this talking rag could fly across the country and come back again. She wanted to learn yet no school would have her as she was considered a savage . Her Grandfather would tell a story that had been with the Piute people a long time and Sarah would not forget it. This Great Basin area, or Nevada, we call it, is where Sarah grew up. Once grown up, she would reach from one end of the country to the other in her quest for fairness and justice for her people. She would lecture, she would visit Congress, she would visit the President. Finally, Sarah would write the first book ever written by a Native Person, and from an Indian tribe. It would be published by Mary Mann, wife to Horace Mann who pushed for our public school system. This book of 64 pages is written in both Spanish and English. It is in full and brilliant color on every page, set up in such a way that English is on one side and the cross page has the Spanish. The same illustration is repeated on each page. The purpose of such a set-up is to reach second language children to read to parents and parents to read in their first language to children, thus both learning two languages well.
