The Legend of Kalikimaka is a Christmas tale for Hawaii similar to the Christmas tale of Santa Claus created by Clement Moore s Poem, The Night before Christmas, and the legendary information on Saint Nicholas passed down from generation to generation in Europe. This is much more than just a juvenile picture book. The concepts and tale are meant to be of the nature of an old Hawaiian storyteller recounting the stories of the great Hawaiian Maui. I feel that the ancients would find the story fascinating and would be willing to accept it with passion. Hawaiians love Santa Claus as much as any other people love the jolly old elf. The Legend of Kalikimaka is written so as to be complementary to the tale of Santa Claus; Santa and Mrs. Claus are integral to the plot. Maui, Santa, and Mrs. Claus become friends. The Legend is consistent with Hawaiian folklore and history. Maui pulls up a new island. Alohalani flies, based on her experiences with Grandfather Maui changing into owl form to play as a child. Uncles and Aunties play a big part in the Legend; No child knows whether the Kalikmaka Auntie if their aunt or mother. They'd better be good. A team of owls, (Puao, consistent with the birds importance in Hawaiian culture) pulls an air board full of toys as the procedure for delivery with Alohanlani leading.Pelea, granddaughter of the goddess of Hawaiian volcanoes, in a fit of jealousy, flares up the volcano, trying to stop cousin Alohalani in her toy deliveries. Menehune are a bit more visible than might be normal, and capture the spirit of Hawaian surfers as Kekoa instructs look for the menehune as they surf the big North Shore waves each Kalikimaka Day twilight. This new legend is also a new Hawaiian Christmas song, with ukeleles, and uncles Rob and Nathan singing. Rob's daughter, Corrie, sings the part of Alohalani.
