The cartoon type illustration that accompanies each poem and the author's strict attention to meter and the rules of rhyming, encourages young children to read the accompanying verse. The poems cover situations and topics that young children can easily understand and each poem ends with an unexpected, humorous twist that will make even the adult reader laugh. The author reads his poems and shows his illustrations to hundreds of children, each year, at schools and at the George Bush Presidential Library where he volunteers as a Storyteller. The poems in It Came Knocking are selected from the hundreds of poems in the author's collection that generated the greatest response from his young audiences.
