MoreFor ages 9-12. Children all over the world share a common belief in a mythical person created in part by loving parents -- the jolly old man in the red hat and suit who drives a sleigh pulled by flying reindeer. As children come of age, they begin to seek truthful answers about this magical figure. The memories of how those answers are found will stay with them forever. After all these years, I can still remember the day I had to confront this issue. Like most children who are told that this person wasn't real, I didn't punch anybody in the nose or rush home to confront my parents. I simply carried the loss quietly within pretending I knew the truth all along. But, honestly, the holiday season was never quite as bright as before. This past Christmas, our nine year old grandson, Zachary, was faced with his first Christmas without his mother, Penny, who had lost a courageous battle against a very rare cancer. It was a Christmas that left Zachary deciding for himself about Santa Clause, while also searching for answers to the mystery of his family's deep personal loss. A series of conversations with Zachary Conner and his two sisters, Brooke Ashley, age thirteen, and Morgan Ryan, five, about the subject of Santa Claus, along with the subject of losing someone you love, guided my creative process in writing, 'If You Believe'. It is my hope that when you read this story, you, too, will once again find the spirit and thrill of believing.
