MoreThis is a children's book that tells of the boyhood adventures of a Navajo boy growing up in the Canyon de Chelly of Arizona at the beginning of the last century. Illustrated in color by a distinguished Navajo artist, Irving Toddy the book recreates the majesty of the red rock walls of the canyon and the mystery of the ruins of the Anasazi, the "Old People." the artist captures of the emotions of the boy, Joseph, and of his friend, Grey Eyes, in their adventures together. In the end, under pressure from the Navajo policemen, Joseph is forced to leave his mother and the canyon he loves, and to make a trek through the forest to start his schooling at Fort Defiance. There he is reunited with Grey Eyes and he learns English for the first time. Irving Toddy's paintings are of his own people, the Navajo, and of the vast landscapes of the Navajo reservation; he also paints other Native American people and their homelands in the West. His work has been featured at most of the Native American art shows throughout the country and his paintings hang in many public and private collections. He has illustrated the cover of "Waterless Mountain," and the children's books, "Cheyenne again," "Uncigilia's Seventh Spot," and "Bird Talk." His works can also be found in "Cricket" and "Spider" magazines. He lives in Pine Springs, Arizona, on the Navajo nation with his wife and family.
