Adventure is Amys middle name, and exploring America in a motorhome is a trip full of excitement. But sometimes Amys quest for adventure brings her face to face with danger, as when she slips and plummets toward a waterfall in Vermont, and when she loses her only source of oxygen at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.

As the family visits historical places, the nations history teaches young Amy. She writes in her journal dramatic first-person accounts of a teenager on the Mayflower, a dying Confederate soldier, and a girl on the Oregon Trail whose sacrifices parallel her own. And we glimpse our nations history through these young eyes.

Governors, Amy learns, are no different than her vast and diverse country. Some have invited her to dinner or gone beyond her list of questions to reveal their personal lives and dreams, while others have been abrupt, cold, or refused interviews altogether.

What began as her parents dream to discover America with their children, becomes Amys personal goal to meet every single governor. When she seemingly falls short of her goal with only two states left to visit, Amy loses hope. But disappointment turn to triumph when through perseverance, and an unusual turn of events, Amy finds herself at a national political convention. There, governors and their aides rally around Amy and help turn her dream into reality.
