Sample a bit of southern culture in Welcome to Georgia, Kids! A Collection of Stories and Art by Georgia's Children. The pint-sized guide features stories and art about Georgia, its history, folklore, attractions, and lifestyle. Hundreds of s chool children from across Georgia competed in a statewide contest for the honor of appearing in Welcome to Georgia, Kids! Though each child worked independently to produce their story and art, together -- amazingly -- a guided tour of the Peach State emerges!
Twenty-nine Georgia school children whose writing and art skills are featured in a new book suddenly find themselves the center of attention all over the Peach State. Children featured in Welcome to Georgia, Kids! A Collection of Stories and Art by Georgia's Children find themselves in high demand by newspapers and TV and for book signings. Media Play stores around metro Atlanta, Barnes & Noble in Augusta, Serendipity Books in McDonough and Onyx Entertainment in Gainesville have hosted book signings for the young writers and artists so far. News of Georgia's positive image as portrayed in Welcome to Georgia, Kids! hasn't gone unnoticed by the state's highest elected official. In a personal letter to each child, Governor Zell Miller expressed his appreciation for their "love for Georgia," and designated each a Young Ambassador of Goodwill for the State of Georgia. To properly thank the governor for the high honor bestowed upon them, the children are signing a copy of Welcome to Georgia, Kids! to be formerly presented later in the year. Other state officials have taken notice as well. State Rep. Roy Barnes of Mableton officially introduced Welcome to Georgia, Kids! to the governor's office, a copy of the book is on display at the Department of Industry, Trade & Tourism ("a wonderful collection" says Visitor Information Services Director Lynn Manley), and State Rep. Gail Buckner of Jonesboro attended a book signing.
