Dr. Driskill refers to Jesus Christ as the "greatest story-teller of all." Since he, along with his wife Lillian, served as missionaries in Japan for many years, they have seen how important a place the art of story-telling holds in Asian societies today. People all around the world love a good illustration.
Stories are so important as a means of communication that it was prophesied that the Messiah would use this method to reveal new truths: "Jesus spoke all these things to the crowd in parables.... So was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet, 'I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter things hidden since the creation of the world'" (Mt 13:34-35).
This book, in a sense, is an extension of the ability of our Lord to illustrate truths through stories. But here it is the lives of those who demonstrated his incarnational love in their service in missions. They are a fulfillment of God's promise, "It is God who is at work in you, both to will and to do of his good pleasure" (Phil 2:12).
The greatest inspirational reading, next to the Bible, comes from delving into the biographies of women and men who have been used of God in their time. Here one gets stories about real people that prove stranger than fiction. The greatest investment we have is our lives. These accounts show us how we too can invest our lives for eternity, even as the ones whose stories are told here have done.
