Smart, independent 11-year-old Khyber lives with her single mom, Tammy, a former stripper, and her autistic twin brothers in a poor neighborhood in Toronto. She doesn't have much in common with her schoolmates, but she does have wonderful, if eccentric, friends: Valerie, the meanest waitress in the city, and X, a mysterious homeless woman who is always hiding from the "secret police." Khyber knows life could be better, but she's content with the way things are. The only thing that really makes her mad is when people pick on her family, like the kids who make ignorant comments about her brothers, or the pompous social workers who make her mother cry. Then Khyber's world starts to fall apart. She fights with her mother when Tammy decides the boys must be moved to a group home, and she is expelled from school. And X suddenly disappears. Khyber's search for X turns into an all-night odyssey through the city streets. Her wild adventure brings to life the hope and joy of friendship.
